The History of Dansalan College Foundation
In 1950, a group of concerned Christian Missionaries and Maranaos established the Dansalan Junior College in Dansalan (Marawi), Lanao as a response to felt need of a tertiary level of education for the Maranao youth. This was the first tertiary level school in the area. Being the only school offering higher education at the time, it provided training opportunities for teachers and would-be lawyers. Eventually the high school program was added.
Demands and needs of the clientele changed along the way. Consequently the programs in Liberal Arts and Education were offered. In 1968, the institution earned a full college status. To provide laboratory school for the Education program, the Pre-School and Elementary school programs were added.
By late sixties, various community services in health, agriculture, basic literacy/adult education, community organizing, cooperatives, population education and among others, were rendered by the faculty and staff in surrounding communities. This community work experience led to the formal organization of Dansalan College Community Service. Responding further to the socio-culture needs of the larger community, the Dansalan Research Center was established in 1974. As a research center, it conducts development-oriented research which respond to the needs and aspirations of the Maranao society, and researches on issues of Muslim-Christian relations.
Meanwhile the health service activities expanded. This necessitated the formation of the Dansalan Health Services as a separate unit from the Dansalan Extension Services. Due to the changes in programs and concerns, many felt that the name Dansalan College was not anymore reflective of the broad range of activities promoted by the institution. Within the span of three decades, the college has been performing the three major functions of a university: instruction, research and public service. It was then decided that a new corporation be organized as a successor to, but continuing the work of Dansalan Junior College which has established her position of education leadership in the Maranao Muslim community. Thus, by action of the Board of Trustees, Dansalan College became Dansalan College Foundation, Inc. on June 1, 1981.
The Foundation of the institution is more reflective of the expanding activities being envisioned and promoted. Under this umbrella organization are the focus program units: Dansalan College, Dansalan Extension Services, Dansalan Research Center (now the Gowing Memorial Research Center) and the Dansalan Health Services.
Dansalan College Foundation, Inc. is a non-stock & non-profit private education institution related to the United Church of Christ in the Philippines. It is headed by the President who is responded for the over-all management and administration of the multi-faced programs and activities. Direct supervision of program implementation is done by directs who head the major program units. In close coordination and consultation with the President, the Directors serve as liaison officers with any government agency or non-governmental agency or non-governmental organization directly related to the Program Division’s activities.
Members of the faculty and staff are composed of Christians and Muslims who see themselves as partner in development; strive to provide quality education to the youth; seek to unite Muslims and Christians in friendly relations; exemplify in their lives the best of their culture; commit themselves to the easing of tension and the promotion of peace; and develop their full potentials as Filipino people.
