A Muslim-Christianity partnership for development
The Dansalan College Foundation, Inc. (DCFI) is a non-stock, non-profit, private educational institution related to the United Church of Christ in the Philippines (UCCP). It is staffed by booth Christians and Muslims who are expected to: See themselves as partners in social development; Seek to unite Muslims and Christians in brotherly friendship; Exemplify in their lives the best of their respective cultures; Commit themselves to the easting of tensions and the promotion of peace and order between and among themselves; and work to develop their full potentials as Filipino people.
The foundation has three main service units.These are the: Academic, Dansalan Extension Services, and Growing Memorial research Center.These three have been entrusted the full responsibility to carry out the purposes and objectives of the whole foundation.
Objectives of the Foundation
As envisioned by its founders, DCFI was established to:
Improve the human situation of the exploited, the poor, the hungry , the oppressed, and the diseased people of the Lake Lanao area through quality education, community services, and development-oriented research in order to help build a society that is aware and informed.
The DCFI, too, being member of the CREATE-UCCP (Church Related Educational Action Towards Empowerment-UCCP)has adopted the latter’s credo which states that the Foundation seeks a life of faith, learning an action that the intellectually competent and honest, morally and ethically sensitive, and creatively aware, and responsive to the needs, aspirations, and realization of just, free and responsible social order.
The Foundation’s Major Service Programs
A. The Gowing Memorial Research Center (GMRC)
1. It is a center for Research into Muslim-Filipino life society engage in research and evaluation in support of Dansalan Extension Service and other foundation entities engage in advocacy and other research in Lanao on its own initiative.
2. It is a Center for Muslim Filipino Studies conducts annual summer session on Mindanao and Sulu Cultures administers and nurtures them Maise Van Collection of Islamic
and Muslim Filipinos engage in a limited number of scholarly projects, e.g. the Production of Dansalan’s English-Maranao, Maranao English dictionary, Production of Dansalan Quarterly.
B. The DANSALAN EXTENSION SERVICES (DES)
To assist the people of Lanao who need assistance in securing adequate education in order to enable them to learn their food, shelter and clothing. Maintain good health and provide a satisfactory family, community and religious life by helping them discuss, develop and utilize indigenous resources.
ADULT EDUCATION/FUNCTIONAL LITERACY
The adult education program of DES is a program geared toward the aministration of non-formal education to the out-of-school population of selected municipalities in LaNAO del Sur.
It is an off-shoot of the efforts of the late Dr.F.C. Laubach to initiate basic literacy movements in Lanao in the 1930’s. Dr. Frank Laubach, an American missionary is the primw light of the literacy movement that is nowgoing on in the many parts of the. He developed to what is known as the “each one, teach me” method of mass literacy teaching.
Basic literacy classes were opened in an around Marawi City. When the adult Education Program started operations in 1971. To date the program had graduated more than 9,000 maranaos who had become reasonably proficient in the 9R’s.
C. The ACADEMIC PROGRAM
1.The Elementary Education Program
From the time elementary education was started in this school (1979), both preschool and grade school have regularly been made part of the whole programming. Preschool includes nursery and kindergarten, grade school is form I-VI.
2.Te Secondary Education Program
The high school program began in the 1950’s. since then and up to this time, this program has continually been offered to and supported by the young people of Lanao.
